I really wanted to like Wolf Boy for iPhone. I really did. The graphics caught my attention and I was pumped on the thought of yet another brilliant and fun iPhone action brawler app. I was wrong. Despite the awesome art style and animation, this review will go into details why Wolf Boy is mediocre and could have been so much more than it is.

Wolf Boy is about a young boy who has the power to kick ass and turn into a werewolf to kick more ass. This sounds pretty cool at first, and the combat is fun for the first five minutes. After that, you realize you’re fighting an armada of evil tomatoes, pressing the same button over and over to attack. This usually wouldn’t be a problem, but these attacks consist of 3 swipes that don’t even turn into combos, even the game counts your “combo”. Sometimes you pick up cool stuff like swords to vary the gameplay, but the swords disappear after a short amount of time, leaving you with the same repetitive attacks as before. Each attack has a lethargic delay that will test your patience and make you want to strangle Wolf Boy.

I have no gripes about the controls, since they are your average 2D fighter controls with the same ol’ HUD. The werewolf transform button is easily accessible and movement is easy and clear. Too bad Wolf Boy leaves you with no intention to control him.

I don’t’ even want to go into detail about the horrendous sound. All I need to say is that hitting a tomato in Wolf Boy makes my ears bleed. It literally sounds like my iPhone speakers are broken.

Like I mentioned above, Wolf Boy’s crisp-drawn backgrounds and sprites were enough to convince me to download the app. I have no complaints here and Wolf Boy is glowing with style.

Cool upgrades like health power-ups, attack power-ups and speed boosts give purpose to the dozens of coins you collect throughout the levels. If you decide to stick with Wolf Boy for iPhone and smacking tomatoes is your thing, the steep difficulty curve and coin collection will keep you entertained for a while.

Things my friends say when they play Wolf Boy:

This is the stupidest game ever
The controls are really fickle
These tomatoes are mean
Ughhh
I just realized you can jump the entire way through the stages…

Pros
Great 2D Graphics
Wolf Boy animations are stylish
Solid Controls

Cons
Horribly repetitive & primitive gameplay
Ugly sound effects
Tomatoes as enemies

Score: 5.5/10

The first successful iPhone app by Mika Mobile, sold to millions as the #1 action game on the iPhone. Now, with Mika Mobile’s second iPhone app release, OMG Pirates!, 2D action gaming on the iPhone is redefined. From start to finish, I was enthralled with the balance between fun hack-and-slash gameplay, challenging stages, smooth combos and goofy graphics. The game is spectacular in every way, and this in-depth review goes into detail about these spectacular features.

Slashing pirates in OMG Pirates! is probably my favorite thing to do on the iPhone. Unlike most beat-em-up games on the iPhone, OMG Pirates! kept me on my toes. There are multiple enemies including ranged gunners, normal pirates that attack slowly, fast-attacking swashbuckling pirates and bombardiers. At first, the action is slow and the same attack is done over and over, but as the game progresses, more combos are unlocked and gameplay elements expand with brilliant pacing. Counter attacks and quick ninja-moves make the action progressively challenging and interesting, with constant level-ups to create incentive for those “completionist” gamers like myself.

The controls add some extra polish to what made MikaMobile’s last iPhone app so great. The HUD consists of two buttons, one to attack and one to jump, as well as a movement joystick and a “super attack” button that recharges as you fight. The jump button can be used for countering as well as jumping if you press it without moving. The on-screen controls are a breeze and fit perfectly with the fluid graphics, but sometimes I find myself pressing the wrong button when the action gets too intense.

I cannot stress enough how awesomely unique and quirky the sounds are in OMG Pirates! for iPhone. Every little sound is like music to my ears. The catchy ninja-esque soundtrack, the slicing noises and the occasional “Yarr” from the pirates all sound great on the speaker. Without the attention to sound detail, OMG Pirates! wouldn’t be as original and addictive.

I’ll just get this out of the way; I wish every single game on the iPhone had the same graphical style as OMG Pirates! If I were to make an iPhone app, I would follow in the footsteps of MikaMobile. The smooth 2D graphics are achieved through a 3D engine that uses 2D skinned meshes and alpha shaders to achieve their trademark style. Aside from the technical aspects of graphics quality, each environment is hand-drawn with beautiful simplicity, and each character model is animated very well (especially the cartoon gore). The developers definitely know what they’re doing.

After beating the main campaign, you can unlock hard mode, play through survival mode, or battle pirates with crazy cheats you can unlock. Let’s just say you need to be a “master” a few times before unlocking them. If you are still bored with the game after all of this, you either have no taste in great games or you haven’t tried the campaign without dying at all. Pick up this app right now for $1.99 if you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and see why this is one of my favorite apps of all time!

Score: 10/10

The devs behind TinyUmbrella have released a new 4.02.04 version for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. This version of TinyUmbrella now supports iPhone iOS 4.0.2, iPad 3.2.2. TinyUmbrella on iPhone and iPad is used to restore older firmware from backups with SHSH blobs. Here is a quick guide on how to save SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella.

Simple Mode

Run the TinyUmbrella. (Mac users: Copy the app to your desktop or you’ll get repeating password prompts if you ran the app from within the DMG).
Now Connect your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G, iPod Touch 3G or iPod Touch 2G or iPad to your computer
Now Simply Hit the Save My SHSH button and TinyUmbrella will grab SHSH blobs of the latest firmware for the connected device. This will also generate a ticket to save SHSH blobs to Saurik’s server.

All Done! You have secured your future jailbreak by saving SHSH blobs for iOS 4 using TinyUmbrella. You can find the saved SHSH file under:

Advanced Options

If you’ve SHSH blobs saved via Cydia for an older firmware and want to get those old SHSH blobs into your computer or want to save SHSH blobs without connecting your device (not possible for iPhone 4) simply by providing ECID, then use the advanced options. You can also download latest firmware blobs via Advanced options.

Connect your Device to your computer and fire up the TinyUmbrella.

Check mark the advanced options.

ECID: TinyUmbrella auto detects your iDevice ECID or you can enter manually if device not connected. (How to: Check ECID)

Device/Version: Select your device and the firmware version for which you have saved SHSH blobs on Saurik server or the latest one.

Locations: Select Cydia or Apple. This is what these options do:

Cydia: searches for SHSH blobs on Cydia. If found, then it downloads them to your PC. If NOT found, then it pings Apple server for the blobs and download them to you PC if being signed by Apple and also submits a ticket to Cydia server to save blobs there.

Apple: Directly pings Apple server and download SHSH blobs for currently signed firmware to your Computer. It does NOT submit a ticket to Cydia for saving SHSH there or download older blobs.

Hit the Save my SHSH button.

TinyUmbrella 4.02.04

Download TinyUmbrella 4.02.04

Windows [Mirror 1]

Mac OSX [Mirror 1]

Linux OS [Mirror 1]

You want to save SHSH blobs because it is easier to access outdated signed firmware from the Saurik server just in case the latest firmware doesn’t have a jailbreak. Now you have a backup of your signed firmware on the Saurik server, so you can go back and restore if you want to downgrade your firmware. Here is a guide how to downgrade 4.0.2 to 4.0.1.

I found Angry birds to be a entertaining little gem of an iPhone game that can’t be missed. The storyline takes place in a random far-off world with really weird looking birds. One day, little stupid-looking green pigs decided to steal all the bird eggs, and now these angry birds are out for vengeance! No matter if you are a casual iPhone user or a hardcore app gamer, Angry Birds will keep you laughing at its charm and keep you playing for hours.

The goal of the game is to shoot Angry Birds with your slingshot at the enemy pig houses and destroy the pigs inside. As each stage progresses, the pigs get harder to destroy with bigger houses, so that’s where strategy comes in with finding weak spots. You can different types of birds with upgrades like multi-bombs and seeking missiles to make gameplay more exciting. Some stages are harder than others, some even frustrating, but there’s enough challenge and variety to keep you entertained.

Simple is always better. Touch and drag your finger to aim the Angry Bird and release it to fire at the pig houses. Easy to learn how to play, hard to master your aiming trajectories. There were some minor difficulties with gravity judgements, but they were hardly noticeable and easy to adapt to.

The constant chirps and harsh screeching from each bird as you shoot them is hilarious, and the crashing sound crisp and clear.

Most of the charm in Angry Birds is shown in the graphics. Rich 2D artwork, bubbly character design and smooth animation look great on a brilliantly lit iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad screen. These are the visual characteristics I love to see in a mobile game app.

Angry Birds is definitely one of the best apps on the app store, with great playability, clear sound, great artwork, simple controls, and multiple stages. There’s not much to do after beating the game, but after completing each stage, the game gives you a rating out of 3 stars, so see if you can master each stage and earn 3 stars! This game belongs on any iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad for only $0.99.

Score: 8.5/10

Gameloft is up to their usual antics, that being creating outstanding games for the iPhone, like Zombie Infection, while stealing gameplay elements from popular franchises. This game is no exception to these usual antics. Zombie Infection is basically Resident Evil 5 with a few twists to the gameplay, a different story, and different locations (that still look surprisingly similar) and no upgrade/inventory system. Even though this sounds like a turn-off, Zombie Infection for iPhone is executed with beautiful graphics, fluid gameplay and solid controls. Overall, I was highly impressed with this game and found it worthwhile for gamers and people who love to kills zombies.

The gameplay is surprisingly addicting and fresh. I started playing this app with expectations of another mediocre zombie shooter, but quickly realized how much of a gem it is. If you’ve played Resident Evil 4 or 5, there’s not much new to the formula, but I’ll elaborate for those who haven’t. The basis of the game is to move through linear environments from a 3rd-person shooting perspective, smash boxes, grab ammo, waste your ammo on zombies, imput a touch-screen action sequence, find a key, unlock a door, repeat. This may sound boring, but the shooting mechanics are surprisingly polished and fighting swarms of oncoming zombies with your arsenal, including your fists, is a blast.

The controls are spot on, but are naturally a bit clunky. Most iPhone apps with on-screen joysticks are going to have a higher learning curve, but besides that, the controls are great and the button commands are easily accessible. You move with a virtual joystick on the left, fire and melee attack with buttons on the right, manage your weapons easily and you can actually move while you’re aiming to shoot, unlike Resident Evil 4/5! To sum things up, the controls are excellently polished and well done.

Gunshots, music, zombie growls and other sound effects all sound clear, even though the iPhone or iPod Touch speakers. Cutscenes and voice work are console-production quality and fit the characters well. You also have the option to listen to your personal music library during gameplay.

Usually I tend to lean toward 2D-style graphics on the iPhone, but Zombie Infection’s 3D creepy atmospheric environments won me over. There’s plenty of variety and the environments are far from monotonous. Character models are detailed and HD textures are high-resolution and run smoothly with a stable framerate on my iPod Touch 3G.

The dozen or so levels last for about 5 hours and there are numerous achievements, and you have the option to replay levels and collect hidden medals. For $2.99, Zombie Infection for iPhone definitely deserves it’s place among your kickass app collection.

Score: 8.5/10

It looks like Google is really getting on top of the mobile app market with these new updates. Here’s what’s new in Google Mobile App version Version 0.6.0.4416

Now, whenever you receive a new email message or calendar alert, your Google Mobile App icon will notify you of the change so you can access it later. A Push notification allows an application to listen for messages being ‘pushed’ to it from the server. So what’s the big deal? The iPhone does not allow us to run multiple applications at once, but through Push Notification, our apps can provide uses even when they aren’t running, like the example above with email alerts

You can get the mobile app for Google free from the iTunes store! Don’t worry, you dont have to have a jailbreak iPhone to use it

This horrid game is about shooting condoms at sperm and other various crap that flies at you, while trying your hardest to not let any “objects” get past you. The game also has a charming mascot named Mr. Cond, who never appears in the actual game whatsoever except for the iPhone icon and the title screen. With that in mind, now read the optimistic developer’s enthusiastic description:

It’s an exciting game! Various opponents, unique gameplay, nice graphics. You can play with accelerometer. Everybody must think of their health. Your uncare about health and safety is results in death.

Watch out! Your uncare can result in death. Everyone should be careful about their “uncare”.

The concept of Mr. Cond is, like stated above, built around shooting condoms at flying sperm and trapping them, making it safe for them to pass by you. Your job is to control the condom launcher on the right of the screen and shoot the sperm without letting too many by, which results in game over. Other random objects that fly at you include pills, squiggly things, coins, and fuzzy things. Who knew Mr. Cond could catch so many things? The first time I played, I had a game over in 5 seconds, due to the horrendous controls. Speaking of which..

Let’s just say you’d have an easier time if you just put on a real Mr. Cond. The game claims to have “accelerometer” controls, but I ended up having to slide my finger up and down to move my “shooter” and deal with crappy akward movements. When you use your finger to move, you cant even see where your condom is, and you end up missing your target! Now you have to deal with death because of your “uncare”.

The sound includes repetitive drum beats that are literally the same 4 second track played on repeat over and over. Suitible for a game called Mr. Cond.

Unless you want to show you friends “hey look at this condom game I have!” then stay away from this app. If you’re like me and appreciate a good “crappy app” once in a while for a laugh, give this game a try, and show your friends (the right ones who will appreciate it).

Score: 2.5/10

Since there are over 300,000 apps in the App Store, Apple has finally decided to categorize them more specifically. Finally! Better yet, the newest category is “apps to impress your friends with.” I think this is one of the best ideas Apple could come up with, regarding their app store success. Here’s why.

1. There is always one thing on Apple’s mind, and that is $$$. Even though we all know that Steve Jobs loves all of us dearly, the clear motive for creating this category is to boost “word of mouth” advertising. They want you to download these apps, show all of your friends and convince them to buy iPhones as well.

2. Here’s the genius of it: YOU CAN’T RESIST! Any iPhone user (especially iPad users) will admit that they show off their favorite apps to their friends once in a while. Sometimes they even search the app store with showing-off being their only concern! People have been flaunting their iPhone capabilities since the first Jailbreak iPhone.

Everyone wins, so props to Apple on this one. Quality app developers get more exposure and the higher bar is set, show-offs get to show off, and Apple gets more loyal iPhone followers! The only downside I see to this is a possible surge of gimmicky apps like iBeer…

What say you?
